Advantages of Using a Mini-Split Air Conditioning System

Mini-Split air conditioner systems are getting a lot of attention these days because of their simplicity of installation and the capability they provide to control temperatures by zones, among other benefits. Those who have added a room to their home or have a multi-family facility can easily install and take advantage of its quiet efficiency. They can be used to replace or augment space heaters, radiant panels, and hot water heaters.

Mini-Split Advantages

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, mini-split air conditioner systems have the advantage over other options because of their small size and their flexibility in heating or cooling individual rooms or zones. For example, one outdoor compressor and condenser unit can be connected via tubing to four small indoor air handling units, each with its own thermostat.

The tubing system for air exchange also makes the mini-split easier to install, particularly when compared with systems that need bulky duct systems and a basement or attic evaporation unit. Hooking up the indoors to the outdoor unit usually only requires opening a three-inch hole for the conduit. The length of the conduit can be as much as 50 feet, meaning the outdoor compressor can more easily be located in a out-of-the-way spot.

Because it needs no duct work, a mini-split will avoid the costly loss of heating or cooling suffered by systems dependent on ducts. According to studies, ducts can lose as much as 30 percent of energy in room conditioning, particularly if they are located in areas that are not heated or cooled, such as in unfinished attics.
